It hasn’t always been the greatest mom-son relationship between Madonna and Rocco Ritchie, but the pop legend is sticking up for the 16-year-old after reports surfaced Wednesday he was arrested for possession of marijuana in London.

Madonna released a statement to The Associated Press calling the September arrest “a family matter.” Her statement read: “I love my son very much. I will do whatever I can to give him the support that he needs, and I ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Madonna and Ritchie’s father, Guy Ritchie, divorced in 2008, and Rocco has been mired in a custody battle between the two. They recently agreed to allow Rocco to continue living with his father in London.

According to The Sun newspaper, neighbors called police when they saw Rocco smoking weed in public view. He has been caught by photographers on multiple occasions smoking and drinking what appears to be alcohol in Central London.
