In the early 2000s, Johnny Depp made France his primary home during his long relationship with partner Vanessa Paradis.
In an interview with a German newspaper, Depp criticized former President George W. Bush and the United States.
“America is dumb, it’s like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive,” he said at the time.
“My daughter is four, my boy is one. I’d like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out.”
Depp later went on to explain that he was happy that Americans had started calling “french fries” “freedom fries” due to France’s opposition to the Iraq War.
“Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots,” he explained.
After the public reacted negatively to his comments, Depp issued an apology where he reaffirmed his love for the United States.
“I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it,” Depp’s statement reads. “It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful,” Depp said in a statement.
Depp went on to explain that he was misquoted and that his comments were taken out of context.
“My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent.”
Eight years later, in 2011, Depp explained his relationship with America and noted that he felt Europe was a more freeing place.
“I’m certainly not ready to give up my American citizenship,” Depp explained, and he noted that he didn’t want to pay taxes in two countries, so he spent more than half the year in the United States.
“You don’t have to give up your American citizenship,”
On Friday afternoon, Depp was back in the news for more negative reasons after his wife, actress Amber Heard, filed for divorce from him on Monday. During her petition for divorce, Heard revealed photos that show injuries Depp inflicted on her in fits of rage.
TMZ and People later published an image from those court proceedings that Heard claims was the result of Depp smashing his iPhone into her face.
