ICYMI, there have been several heinous shootings around town

Police taped off a portion of a parking lot behind Sharpstown Mall on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, in Houston. Two men were expected to survive after having been shot Thursday in a drug-related shootout at an apartment complex across the street from a mall, police said. The shooting was initially reported as an attempted carjacking in the mall's parking lot. But investigators later determined the two unidentified men were injured during a gun battle involving up to five people inside an apartment at a complex across the street from Sharpstown Mall in southwest Houston, said Houston Police Capt. Bruce Williams. (AP Photo/Houston Chronicle, Sharon Steinmann )

Around 8 p.m. on the 3900 block of Broadway in southeast Houston, two armed suspects reportedly attempted to rob the store Flores’ mother Hilda Vasquez when Javier stepped in front to protect her.

In an emotional press conference with the Houston Police Department, Hilda said she was often afraid on the job.

“Every time I was there with my son, I stayed until the store closed with him. I didn’t want him to be by himself because I was always scared,” the grieving mother said along side her husband Carlos. “They didn’t have to shoot my son.”

HPD released surveillance footage from a second Subway robbery incident about 30 minutes after robbing the Vasquezs showing the two suspects they believe to have been involved with killing Javier.

Because people are monsters and the world isn’t bad enough already, another senseless crime occurred Saturday near the intersection of the Beltway and Fuqua when a speeding car collided with Latoyia Thomas’ car, and the driver began shooting at their vehicle.

Thomas’ daughter, DeÂMaree Adkins, was killed by the shots.
