Actor Alec Baldwin is not a star that many people associate with drug problems, but in his new memoir, “Nevertheless,” the star is opening up about his struggles as a young man. On Monday, Baldwin will appear on “Good Morning America” with George Stephanopoulos, and segments of his interview have already been released.

The actor took his last drink on February 23, 1985, and in a clip from the interview, Stephanopoulos asks him, “What if you hadn’t stopped drinking?” Baldwin answers, “I think I was one of the people who was lucky that [sobriety] stuck, and if I didn’t get it then, I would’ve got it eventually.”

He mused, “Not many people get sober when they’re young, I got sober when I was just about to turn 27.” For two years, Baldwin says, “[He] was a daily drug abuser–a daily drinker,” admitting, “that was a tough time, there was really, really a lot of pain in there.”

Baldwin has kept his addiction and recovery private, but his new memoir is likely to shed light on the darker times in his life. In his “Good Morning America” interview, Baldwin also revealed that, at one point in his twenties, he even overdosed.

In 2009, Baldwin penned an essay in “Moments of Clarity,” a book featuring stories by stars suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. He described his early twenties as a time “when [I was] dead but didn’t know it.” During the ’80s, he was a soap star and would usually spend all night drinking and find himself at a warehouse playing “Galaga” at 9 a.m.
