Mary “Dolly” and Ferdinando “Freddy” Acerra met in a small town near Naples, Italy, while Dolly was on vacation from the United States. After falling in love and getting married, the couple moved to New York, where they raised their family and owned a small shop in Yonkers called Jennifer’s House of Cards and Gifts.

On Friday, the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary apart — Dolly at home and Freddy at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. On Monday, they met again in heaven.

Dolly passed away in her sleep at the age of 86 after battling intestinal cancer. Freddy, 89, followed just three hours later, putting a romantic close to their relationship that fans of “The Notebook” will surely find touching.

Their son Gaetano Acerra, who was worried that one of them would suffer from “broken-heart syndrome” should the other pass first, says it’s no coincidence.

“She said, ‘Let’s go, Freddy,'” Gaetano said.
