While we don’t often think of them as caring creatures, it turns out that mother alligators are actually pretty maternal. A group of golfers learned that the hard way when they were chased off the course by a mother alligator relocating her young.

According to the cameraman, the alligator spent all day looking for a safer place for her kids. Finally, she found a deeper pond, and they settled in. She actually had 16 babies, and every time she bumped into a golfer, she ran away.
While alligators are at the top of the food chain, it’s not uncommon for them to eat each other. A 2011 study published by the Herpetoligists’ League found that alligators eat 6 to 7 percent of the “juvenile alligator population.”
