Pedals, the social media famous bipedal bear, was recently killed during a New Jersey hunt.

For nearly two years, the American black bear shocked members of a largely rural northern New Jersey community by walking effortlessly on his hind legs.

Pedals had his own Facebook fan page, where hundreds of thousands signed an online petition calling for state wildlife officials to capture the injured bear and place him in a sanctuary.

During the state’s first bow hunt in four decades, nearly 500 bears were slaughtered in only one week. The state Division of Fish and Wildlife confirmed late Friday evening that pictures of a dead injured bear were submitted to the Green Pond check station in Rockaway earlier this week.

“There are pictures of a bear with injured limbs that was brought into the station,” Bob Considine, a spokesman for the Division of Fish and Wildlife, told USA Today.

The Pedals the Injured Biped Bear Facebook page released a post about the animal’s death, which has since been deleted.

“PEDALS IS DEAD,” the post said. “The hunter who has wanted him dead for nearly 3 years had the satisfaction of putting an arrow through him, bragging at the [check] station.”
