It’s a story we will never forget.

As Kelsea Ballerini seemed at the top of her professional career, her personal life came crashing down when she lost both of her grandparents in the span of just 39 hours this past October. And for a moment, awards, hits and magazine covers didn’t matter anymore.

Kelsea was hurting.

The Rare Country Awards “New Artist of the Year” nominee recently sat down with us before her show in Chicago to talk about her beloved grandparents, and how their loss just might bring with it a creative avalanche.

“I had heard of people growing old together and then they pass away really soon from one another, but it was always just a story to me,” Kelsea said. “But when it happened, it was so heartbreaking, especially for my dad to lose both of his parents literally within hours of one another. But also, my parents are divorced and I was always bummed that I didn’t know a good ole love story in our family. So when that happened, it was kinda like now I do. It was really a beautiful thing in that way.”

She stopped for a moment to gain her composure, affected by the pure emotion of the moment. “I think once I let everything process and some time goes by, yes – there might be a song to come out of it,” she said.

And what a beauty that song will be.
