If you’ve been watching the new daytime talk show, “Harry,” hosted by actor, crooner and former “American Idol” judge Harry Connick Jr., you have probably been enjoying the segments where Harry catches up with former “Idol” winners. He’s already visited with Kelly Clarkson, Kellie Pickler and LaPorsha Renae, but on Nov. 18, he spoke with season 10 winner Scotty McCreery.
Looking as handsome as ever, Scotty was utterly charming as Harry coaxed favorite “Idol” memories out of the country star. And surprisingly, although that was five years ago, Scotty could recall many of the details of his experience, including his audition.
“We went up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and I didn’t tell anybody, I didn’t want them to laugh at me,” he said. “We’re walking around the arena, me and my pops, and there’s people practicing and I’m like, ‘Man, what am I doing here. I’m in over my head. These people are great.’ And Dad said, ‘Just give it your best shot and see what you can do.’ It was quite an experience. It worked out OK, but I was scared to death.”
The modest country boy, known as much for his sweet spirit and his profound faith as he is for his rumbling baritone, added, “There were 15,000 folks trying out for “American Idol” and I was just a grocery store bagger from North Carolina. I mean, come on. It’s not supposed to work out like that… but pretty cool.”
Harry also gave his guest a chance to “set the record straight” on any “Idol” rumors or gossip, and Scotty had an immediate response. He smiled and said, “When I was on the show, everybody thought that me and Lauren Alaina were a couple, we were dating. And while we were great friends, and she might have planted a big, fat one on me at the finale on live television, we were never dating. We were great friends though. She’s really sweet. Terrific lady, incredible vocalist, good friend, she’s awesome.”
There’s another terrific lady in Scotty’s life, too — his girlfriend of five years Gabi Dugal. The singer told Harry that the couple actually met in kindergarten and that he had staged her appearing in his video for “The Trouble With Girls” to get closer to the beauty.
Yep, he stole that one right off the Brad Paisley playbook. Brad’s wife, Kimberly Williams Paisley, appeared in his video for “I’m Gonna Miss Her” before the couple tied the knot.
