Country newcomer Michael Ray grew up singing classic country songs in his family’s band in Eustis, Florida, so he knows every word to Randy Travis’ hit songs. One of the first Randy Travis songs Michael sang in the family band was “He Walked on Water,” which is a tribute to the singer’s great-grandfather.

That song took on extra meaning for Michael two years ago when his grandfather, who led the family band, passed away. This was the man who taught him all about country music, and Michael got to honor his grandpa in an amazing way at the recent Randy Travis tribute concert in Nashville by singing “He Walked on Water.”
Just after the performance, Michael told Rare Country, “[That song] always meant a lot to me and reminded me of my grandfather. Today is actually the two-year anniversary of his funeral.”
Randy and his wife, Mary, were sitting on the side of the stage as Michael sang “He Walked on Water.” Michael felt his late grandpa’s presence, too.
“In the moment of singing, I felt energy like I’ve never felt before,” he added. “I felt a little emotional toward the middle a little bit. I was like, ‘Get it together, get it together!'”
Michael is honored Randy and Mary chose him to sing “He Walked on Water.” Later, Michael stood next to Randy and a few of his other heroes on the bill for the finale of “Amazing Grace” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
Michael said of that moment, “I’m like, ‘I just did ‘Amazing Grace’ with Travis Tritt right beside each other.’ We were hugging each other. I walk offstage, and I go, ‘What just happened?’ Collin Raye… Daryle Singletary… the list goes on… Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson [and] Garth Brooks. That’s why I was videotaping the whole time. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to believe I did this tomorrow.’ I’m going to need some documentation.”
