It’s hard to remember a time when George Strait wasn’t hailed as the King of Country Music. Back in 1985, George was just getting revved up, though. That’s the year he won his first CMA Award for album of the year with “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind.” He also repeated with a second consecutive win in the male vocalist category.
In this throwback clip from that year’s show, you see a baby-faced George accepting the male vocalist award from a very young Reba McEntire.
Special shout out to Reba’s hairdo, by the way. It was just the beginning of her big hair phase that would peak in the early ’90s.
As for George, he was just beginning to reach superstar status in 1985. He would go on to take the CMA entertainer of the year trophy in 1989, 1990 and again in 2013. It’s clear from these vintage clips that George has always been a man of few words who prefers to let his music do the talking.
While accepting the male vocalist trophy, George asked the crowd, “Do I look nervous?” He went on to say, “I really appreciate this. I’ll never forget this night as long as I live.”
The camera then cuts to a shot of George’s gorgeous wife, Norma, who is still by his side today.
We expect George will be on hand for the 50th Annual CMA Awards airing Nov. 2 on ABC. Look for his new box set, “Strait Out of the Box: Part 2,” to be released exclusively at Walmart on Nov. 18.
