Though many fans may know him from his role in the “Police Academy” series, Goldthwait is actually a very soft spoken and introspective comic.

In 2009, Williams starred in Goldthwait’s directorial effort, “World’s Greatest Dad.”

In a poignant interview with Joe Rogan, Goldthwait spoke about his deep pain over the loss of his friend in 2014. Goldthwait told fans that Williams was the best man at his wedding and that the two communicated almost every single day.

Goldthwait was one of few people who knew that Williams had been diagnosed with a cognitive disorder. Though he was original diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, postmortem testing confirmed that Williams was suffering from Lewy Body Dementia in the final months of his life. According to Goldthwait, this led to a version of Williams that friends and family had difficulty processing. Williams had become to prone to seizures, depressive episodes and moments of mania that were uncharacteristic of his personality.

“His brain was getting misinformation, and he was processing reality completely wrong. I won’t go into details, but I did witness him thinking things weren’t real were happening,” Goldthwait explains to Rogan.

“I witnessed him processing reality completely different than the way everyone else was.”

According to Goldthwait, despite the many days that Williams was suffering from pain, he was still able to have days where he “was back.”

“I would like a spotlight put on the disease that actually, in my mind, was what was responsible for his demise.”
