In America, it’s pretty difficult to find people who are supportive of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and it turns out that the leader hasn’t won over his own country, either. A Washington Post story grabbed attention Wednesday with the headline, “It’s now illegal in Russia to share an image of Putin as a gay clown.”

And, while this was a week for absurd stories, it’s possible that the Post took the gold with their absurd headline. Of course, the image they ran alongside the article was equally ridiculous.

On Friday night, Stephen Colbert took advantage of the opportunity to lampoon news that is so ridiculous it’s barely believable. The “Late Show” host dedicated a portion of his opening monologue to the image and the article, quipping, “Since all clowns look alike, how can Vladimir Putin tell a straight clown from a gay clown…clown sex has no rules.”
