Dave Chappelle’s Bit on the “Oscars boycott” Shows He’s Still a Sharp-Witted Comedy Giant

Earlier this week, the comedy world had to stop and take a deep breath at the release of Dave Chappelle’s new comedy specials. For many of us, it was the ultimate moment of truth, and the question on everybody’s minds was the same: “Does Chappelle still have it?”

We were all extremely relieved to discover that Chapelle, who was once the biggest name in comedy, had not lost his touch. The specials featured the comedian returning to many of his old topics like policing, O.J. Simpson and race relations. In fact, race relations has long been one of Chappelle’s strong suits. Perhaps the most well-known segment from “Chappelle’s Show” is the “black white-supremacist” sketch.

Chappelle joked that he turned up at the Oscars and was immediately harassed by what he called “the black press,” who asked why he was appearing at the Oscars during a year when there was a “boycott.” Chappelle joked, “I said boycott […] I haven’t been working in 10 years. I’ve been on strike […] I had to watch ‘Key & Peele’ do my show every night.”
