In the mid-2000s while he was hard at work on “Chappelle’s Show,” Dave Chappelle met a young songwriter and producer named Kanye West who made an immediate impression on the legendary stand up comedian.

In a now-legendary bit on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” from 2014, Chappelle talks about being introduced to West through mutual friends while filming his Comedy Central show.

Kanye’s behavior and confidence stood out to Chappelle, specifically when they were in the editing bay watching some never-before-seen “Chappelle’s Show” skits.

Chappelle recalled one moment in particular that stuck out to him, when Kanye was interrupted by a phone call while they were watching the show.

Chappelle explained the call to Fallon in hilarious fashion, and gave birth to one of the funniest Kanye lines ever.

“‘Hello? No, I can’t. Because I’m at the edit for the Dave Chappelle Show, watching sketches that no one’s seen before’.” West told whoever was calling him.

After a long pause, presumably when the person on the other line asked why he was there, West dropped the hammer of hilarious comebacks.

“‘Cause my life is dope and I do dope shit,” before hanging up the phone and returning to the TV show.
