Jimmy Kimmel just made a pretty big speculation about his future in late night

Like a lot of late-night hosts and writers, Jimmy Kimmel works overtime. In an interview with showbiz magazine Variety, Kimmel was profiled as a man who works 70 hours a week and does “extensive research on his guests.”

However, that might soon be a thing of the past for the host, who said that when his contract expires in 2019, he’s very seriously considering walking.

Kimmel, 49, explained that his wife is pregnant and “I’d like to have a little more free time. I have very little free time as it is.”

He said that he will miss television, but that if he leaves the show bearing his name, it won’t be for another network.

“I’d like to write a book at some point. Doing the show every day doesn’t leave a lot of time for that,” he said.

While it seems like Kimmel is expecting to make an exit, 2019 is a long time away, and there will probably be one or two more shifts in the time slot before he makes his final decision.

In the past few years, there have been a lot of shake-ups in the late-night time slot. David Letterman has moved away, and Stephen Colbert has finally boosted his ratings to match (and sometimes beat) juggernaut Jimmy Fallon. Samantha Bee and John Oliver have both arisen with their own shows that are stealing numbers from competitors.
