On Thursday night, Colbert imagined himself as the senator taking shots at President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State pick, Rex Tillerson.

After interrupting Marco Rubio, Colbert opened his questioning by asking, “Has anybody ever told you that you have the rich, buttery Texan voice that makes you sound like a car dealer with a heart of gold that secretly saves the town football team?”

Like the real-life Rubio, Colbert wasn’t able to get any admission from Tillerson on whether he can deem Vladimir Putin a war criminal.

The actual Tillerson has faced a tough showing in front of senators who are skeptical about his ties to Russia and his ability to distance himself from his past as an oil tycoon.
