This Aussie New Year’s Eve countdown was so awkward, we’re still cringing

2016 is finally over, and most of the world is pretty happy that we’ve turned a page. However, before we forget it entirely, it’s good to look back on those last few moments of the past year.

The internet had a field day with Mariah Carey’s performance on New Year’s Eve, but Australia had the most awkward countdown on the planet.

An Australian music program called “The Loop” held a competition, and the winners got to appear on the show to count down the final seconds until midnight.

Unfortunately, literally none of the “competition winners” looked like they wanted to be there. For some reason, there was an incredibly awkward middle-aged man holding pop-poms and a girl who tossed her party poppers at the hosts.
