A Mother-Daughter Pair Discuss What It’s Like to Have Husbands Who Serve

Linda Sperling and daughter Amanda Tyner have more in common than blood, genes and family history: they both also know what it’s like to have a husband in the service.

Sperling’s husband is retired air force after serving for 31 years, and she says she’s blessed to have a son-in-law who is also serving his country.

“Military has always been an important aspect (in our family),” she said.

But having a husband who is constantly away isn’t easy. For Sperling, the toughest part was making decisions on her own for her daughter after she had been only half of a decision-making pair for so long.

For Tyner, it’s hard not being able to be in constant communication like our generation has grown so used to.

“She’s always been a strong individual,” Sperling said of her daughter.

The pair—with their husbands—attended their first Honor Flight welcoming in Washington, D.C., last month.
