A Tennessee couple could face jail time after they tried to get rid of their newborn in a ridiculously dumb way

John David Cain and Deanna Lynn Greer were arrested last week after they tried to get rid of their 5-month-old child. While most families would pursue a traditional manner of finding the child a better home like enlisting the help of child services or an orphanage, Cain and Greer attempted to sell their child on Craigslist.

ABC reported that the couple posted a Craigslist ad offering their infant in exchange for $3,000. They were apprehended when officers, posed as buyers and the parents traded the baby for cash. According to WATE, the pair are facing “aggravated child neglect or endangerment,” covered under the statute known as Haley’s Law. Justia.com defines a violation of Haley’s Law as an “act of abuse, neglect or endangerment results in serious bodily injury to the child,” and violation of the law is a Class B felony.

The baby is in the care of the Department of Children’s Services. A statement from the Sheriff’s Office claimed that the pair “did knowingly place the child in threat of serious danger, bodily injury or death by selling the child to an unknown person.” They are both being held on $150,000 bond, and both of their court dates are set for the beginning of April.
