Palm Beach County Police Department

Brooke Preston, 21, had recently moved out of the Florida home she had previously shared with roommate Randy Herman Jr. and was planning to move to Pennsylvania to be with her boyfriend. However, when she stopped by to say goodbye to Herman, he fatally stabbed her.

According to authorities, Herman handed Preston a t-shirt honoring the death of a mutual friend and then began stabbing her repeatedly in the abdomen, throat and back. He then drove her car to a park near West Palm Beach and called 911.

“Someone’s been murdered,” Herman told the dispatcher. “Just send the police. It was me. I’m sorry.”

While waiting for police to arrived, Herman texted his mother to say he loved her. Covered in blood, cuts and scratches, he then told deputies to go to his house because someone had been badly hurt. While being questioned, he cried and apologized for the crime.

Preston had reportedly felt uncomfortable staying in the home with Herman on Friday night because he appeared drunk and was acting strangely. So, she came by the home on Saturday morning to pick up some of her belongings and then stopped by again later that day to say goodbye to Herman. The pair were not romantically linked.

Interestingly, Herman’s father was accused of killing his girlfriend two years ago and was found dead in a pickup truck two months later while the case was still being investigated.

Herman has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
