Javier Flores, an 18-year-old Subway employee from Houston, was tragically killed on Wednesday night while trying to protect his mother during an attempted robbery.

The mother and son were the only two people working at the sandwich shop as closing time grew near. Two assailants rushed into the restaurant and pointed a gun at Flores’ mother. Just as the suspect fired off a shot, Flores pushed his mother out of the way, and the bullet hit him instead. The 11th-grader was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“They’re out here working and doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and then these two suspects came in and cut that short, and certainly there was nothing in there that was worth the life of the 18 year old,” said Houston Detective David Crowder.
“He was a good, really good friend,” said Helizander Rodriguez, a friend of Flores. “He took a bullet for his mom.”
“I call him my hero just for doing that,” another friend Endy Herrera followed up.

The suspects promptly fled the scene in a gold, four-door sedan without stealing anything and are still on the loose. They have been described by police as two young African-American men. “There’s no way the community’s going to heal, as long as this is occurring,” Connie Herrera, who lives near the restaurant, said. “As you can see, someone really does pay the price.”
