CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — More than two dozen people were taken to the hospital after a crash involving an elementary school bus in Chattanooga.

Photos released by the Chattanooga Fire Department show the bus split in half by a tree. They said several patients had to be extricated from the bus.

The fire chief told ABC-affiliate WTVC that at least 30 children were injured in the crash that happened just before 3:30 p.m. The bus was carrying kids from Woodmore Elementary School.

Police Chief Fred Fletcher said 35 schoolchildren were on the bus Monday afternoon. He did not have information about the extent of injuries and said rescue efforts were continuing.

Fletcher said at a news conference that the bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

The students on board ranged from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
