The alleged kidnapping of 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas by her 50-year-old former teacher Tad Cummins appears as if it might have been romantically motivated, according to emails between the two that have been released by police.

Maury County District Attorney Brent Cooper told WAAS-TV that the two wrote romantic emails to each other, but never sent them. They would save the emails in draft form and read them when they logged onto their school emails accounts, and then delete the drafts.

“If you read them you would immediately recognize you are reading messages between two people who have a romantic interest in each other,” Cooper told the TV station.

The video above obtained by WKRN-TV from Wayne County Now shows Thomas with her brother apparently sewing a Confederate flag. Law enforcement released the video so the public could recognize her voice.

One email a Maury County Sheriff’s official provided WAAS-TV revealed Cummins complimenting one of Thomas’ body parts.

A $5,000 reward for the teacher’s arrest is being offered by a former co-worker of Cummins. Chandler Anderson, a nurse practitioner, told WAAY-TV that he first met the suspected kidnapper in 1998 when he worked as a respiratory therapist before his teaching job. Anderson said he found it odd that Cummins left the job to become a teacher.

He said he fears Thomas if she is not found soon.

Cummins is believed by authorities to to be armed with two handguns and driving a Nissan Rogue with Tennessee plates. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations said it has received hundreds of tips, but none so far have helped to pinpoint Thomas’ whereabouts.

Cummins was fired from Culleoka Unit School on March 14 when he was accused of kissing Thomas in late January. March 14 is also the day law enforcement issued an Amber alert for the missing teen.

Thomas was last seen on March 13 after a friend dropped her off at a Shoney’s restaurant in Columbia, Tenn. The former science teacher is wanted on charges of sexual contact with a minor and aggravated kidnapping, authorities said.
