Gautier is also known to theater fans as the original Conrad Birdie in the Broadway production, “Bye, Bye, Birdie.”

As Hymie on “Get Smart,” Gautier provided some of the shows biggest laughs.

In 2013, Gautier looked back on his time as Hymie in an interview with Classic Film TV Cafe.

“It was fun doing Hymie on “Get Smart,” though not an actor’s challenge,” Gautier explained.

“When I met with the powers that be, I told them that when I was a kid in Canada, I saw a man in a storefront window acting like a manikin to drum up business. If you could make him smile, you’d get $10. So, I tried, but not by acting crazy–I merely imitated his movements.”

According to Gautier, he was blessed with working with the team on the show

“Again, I was blessed to be working with a talented, nice group of actors. Don (Adams), Barbara (Feldon), Ed Platt, and even Victor French, who was always stuck in a clock or something. They were always pleasant and creative and encouraging to me.”

Gautier had a long career in Hollywood and was most recently seen in a 2010 episode of “Nip/Tuck.”

He was 85 years old.
