During a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, President Barack Obama awarded his dear friend Vice President Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest honor bestowed upon a civilian.
President Obama gave an emotional speech about the man he called his brother, who helped him lead the country for the last eight years.
Vice President Biden seemed genuinely surprised when President Obama called military aids to the podium and awarded him with the medal. He initially turned his back to the camera and choked back tears during the emotional moment.
Throughout the ceremony, both the vice-president and president seemed very emotional. This culminated when Vice President Biden stood at the podium by himself and received a standing ovation from the gathered friends, family, staffers and press.
During his remarks after the award, Biden called his career in politics and time in the White House an incredible journey.
