Following the death of actress Carrie Fisher earlier in the week, comedian Steve Martin posted a tribute to the Hollywood legend.

“When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well,” Martin wrote on Twitter.

According to many people online, including some members of the media, Martin’s tweet should be branded as insensitive towards Fisher’s memory.

The general consensus among those inclined towards outrage was that Martin had inadvertently reduced  Fisher’s legacy to a pretty woman who one would be surprised was “witty and bright as well.”

Martin soon deleted the tweet, and the story went viral.

On Thursday, Martin returned to Twitter and made light of the incident in classic Steve Martin fashion.

“Hey, my Google Alerts just arrived. I can’t wait to read it!” Martin wrote.

Despite the initial outrage, many people supported Martin’s initial tweet and approved of his comedic follow-up.

“Whatever they say, your remembrance was inarguably beautiful,” one user chimed in.
