9:00 a.m. update: Austin police shot and killed an armed woman outside a South Austin apartment complex Sunday morning.
The 26-year-old woman — police would not release her name — was pronounced dead at St. David’s South Austin Hospital just before 5 a.m Sunday.
Police say the woman pointed a gun at them and refused their commands to drop it. Two officers fired at her and she fell, but she picked up the gun and aimed it at the officers again as she lay on the ground, police say. One of the officers fired several times at her, hitting her again, and police were able to take the gun away from her, officials said.
At a press conference Sunday morning, Assistant Police Chief Troy Gay said it started when police received a call about a distressed woman at an apartment complex in the 700 block of West William Cannon Drive around 3:45 a.m. Her husband said she was displaying erratic behavior and asked for a mental health officer to respond, Gay said.
Officers were told before arriving on scene that the woman had a gun, police said.
Gay said the woman came out of Building 14 of the Club at Summer Valley Apartments with the gun pointed toward officers. She was saying, “Shoot me, shoot me, kill me,” Gay said.
Gay said the woman continued to tell officers to kill her as she picked up the gun the second time and pointed it at the officers, Gay said.
Police administered first aid on the woman, Gay said. She was then taken to the hospital by Austin-Travis County EMS, where she died.
“Anytime that we have a loss of life, it’s a very, very tragic event,” Gay said Sunday morning. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the decedent, as well as the officers and their families.”
Police did not release the names of the two officers that fired shots, but both have three years with the department, Gay said. They will be placed on administrative leave pending an Internal Affairs investigation — standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
The Special Investigations Unit of the Austin Police Department will continue the criminal investigation.
Police said they have audio recordings of the incident but no video, and there were no witnesses to the shooting.
