The 19 year-old man at the center of the investigation is a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen living in Ashkelon, in southern Israel. He has been tied to “most” calls placed as part of a coordinated worldwide campaign of bomb threats targeting Jewish institutions in the United States, Europe and New Zealand. International investigators found and connected clues that tied the calls to an Israeli source.

Both the suspect and his father have been detained until March 30. Israeli police say the suspect either worked with his father or entirely alone. They claim the suspect “is not in the IDF, not ultra-Orthodox […] and possibly has psychological problems and few friends.”
Police say the suspect made Aliyah at some point, the traditional return of a Jewish person to Israel.
“He was the main suspect behind the numerous threats that were made to different Jewish communities and organizations around the world,” said Israeli police spokesperson Mickey Rosenfeld. Their next step, he says, is to determine the suspect’s connection to the institutions targeted, as well as any links to those responsible for the cemetery vandalism incidents that have occurred in recent months.
