Watch All 1,544 Feet of This Bridge End Up in a River

The century old Hulton Bridge over the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh came crashing down at 9:49 a.m. on a random Tuesday morning several year ago. It was an event barely billed and hardly covered even by local news reports.

But, looking back on it, it was pretty awesome.

It took 50 pounds of dynamite and 51 charges for the bridge to come down. The explosion lit up the bridge for a second before the whole structure fell into the river, causing an impressive wave and a billow of smoke.

The crew then had 72 hours to get all of the steel out of the river, CBS reports.

A new bridge was finished and opened in October of that same year, but was shut down during the old bridge demolishing. Residents did not mind the 15 minute wait, and were excited to see the old bridge go down.

“I think the people who designed the bridge, had no idea what an 18-wheeler was or would be, and I think it’s pretty cool that it was able to last as long as it did,” Mark Serrao told CBS.
