Donald Trump has been known to fly off the handle on Twitter. He’s gone after beauty queens, Rosie O’Donnell and President Obama. But, in his latest tweet, he’s moved from criticizing to congratulating–this time with the leader of Russia. While America and the Russians have had a shaky relationship for the past several years, Trump has made it clear that he is a fan of Vladimir Putin. His admiration of the leader is also shared with many Republicans; Politico reported a few weeks ago that 37% of Republican voters approve of Putin.

While the GOP electorate might view the Russian president favorably, that sentiment has not been echoed in the halls of Capitol Hill. In an interview with CNN, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) described the Russian politician as a “murderer” and a “thug”.

Trump stayed somewhat distant from Putin during the campaign trail, but he has since indicated a change in diplomatic relations with the nation. His nomination of Rex Tillerson, a man with close ties to the country, for secretary of state is seen by many as a bold move and Tillerson will likely undergo a trying senate confirmation.

In his latest tweet, the president-elect wrote, “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!” He’s probably referring to Putin’s decision not to respond to President Obama’s new sanctions on Russia. The president expelled 35 Russian diplomats after it was revealed that the hacks of the Democratic National Committee were perpetrated by Russian actors.
