UPDATE: Dyersburg police held a press conference at 11 a.m., announcing the arrest of Torius Russell for first-degree murder.
Russell’s bond has been set at $2.5 million.
A 2-year-old’s birthday party in Dyersburg, Tenn., on Thursday night went from a time a celebration to one of horror and mourning in minutes.
The child’s 21-year-old mother was shot and killed, while six others were wounded in what appeared to be either a drive-by or walk-up shooting.
The deceased has been identified as Shanice Amerson. She also had a 3-year-old child.
According to ABC News, the deadly shooting happened around 6:20 p.m.
Four of the wounded were treated at Tennova Healthcare, while a 6-year-old boy was airlifted to the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis in critical condition.
A sixth victim was airlifted to Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Amerson’s best friend is searching for answers.
Police said they received calls about cars driving by and people using guns to intimidate the party guests before the shooting occurred.
According to WREG, Dyersburg Mayor John Holden said there was an incident at the residence earlier Thursday, and authorities believe it is related to the shooting.
Police are actively searching for a motive. At the start, police said they were looking for three suspects. Torius Russell, was arrested around 3 a.m. on Friday and has been charged with first-degree murder.
