Trump had refused to release his tax returns, saying that he would do so once he was no longer under audit. The IRS combated this sentiment, noting that he could still release his returns, as is customary for presidential candidates.
On Wednesday, Joe Scarborough of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” had his own idea about who was truly behind the leak of the president’s tax returns:
This one tax return is not bad for him because he cherry picked one return from over a decade ago and had it leaked to the press. https://t.co/P5cMuApGVe

“This one tax return is not bad for him because he cherry picked one return from over a decade ago and had it leaked to the press,” Scarborough accused.
The Trump camp released one positive tax return to distract from Russia hearings and the Trumpcare meltdown. That's painfully obvious. https://t.co/NLBVPJhwg6

Scarborough isn’t the only one to make a similar speculation.
One journalist pointed out that the tax returns Maddow shared had a “Client Copy” stamp:
