During President-elect Donald Trump’s Wednesday press conference, British GQ correspondent Rupert Myers wondered if President Obama could kill both Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence and then pardon himself.

“Could Obama murder Trump & Pence, then pardon himself?” he asked in a since deleted tweet. “Asking for humanity.”

After being asked about the tweet by Daily Wire’s Harry Khachatrian, Myers played off the question as a joke.

“It was a joke that I quickly realised could be taken out of context,” he replied. “You’ve proved my point.”

When Daily Wire ran a story on the tweet, Myers maintained that it was a joke and added that he was only wondering if the president could actually pardon himself.

“LOL guys it’s really not that slow a news day,” he wrote. “I was just wondering if the president could pardon himself.”

Then, when Twitter users came to the President-elect’s defense, Myers still refused to apologize for his original tweet and claimed he was “being attacked by truly daft & entirely humorless Trump supporters.”

For the record, whether or not the president is allowed to pardon himself is somewhat unclear. However, Article II Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that the president’s pardon power is only limited in cases of impeachment, which leads one to believe that the president could in fact pardon himself for a crime as long as he has not already been impeached.
