MANCHESTER, N.H. – A father of two was arrested after his children were found covered in feces in Manchester, N.H., according to police.

Manchester police officers showed up at an apartment on Quirin Street shortly before 4 a.m. Monday to check on the 26-year-old father and his children.

Police said someone had reported James Grenier might be in danger of hurting himself.

Grenier told the officers he was fine and wasn’t going to hurt himself, so they asked if they could check on his children.

When he let the Manchester officers into the home, they found his 2-year-old and 4-year-old child covered in feces in “extremely unsanitary and unsafe conditions.”

Here’s the description from police:

The officers observed feces in the bedrooms, as well as the beds the children were sleeping on. His four year old son was in a harness attached to his bed, which was covered in both feces and urine. His 2-year-old daughter was unclothed and also covered in feces inside of her crib. The officers determined the condition of the home was deplorable with both feces and trash covering the floors. The fly-infested apartment had food on the counters and piles of human and animal feces scattered throughout the apartment floors. The pungent odor lingered throughout the hallways of the apartment building.

The children were placed in the care of their grandparents and the Department of Child and Family Services is investigating.

Grenier was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering a child and one count of reckless conduct.
