A recent study conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation found that the restaurant chain’s chicken only contains about 50 percent chicken DNA. While chicken purchased from a supermarket should test at 100 percent chicken DNA, meat that has been seasoned or marinated will likely register at a lower percentage. However, most of the fast food chains tested were found to have around 85 and 90 percent chicken DNA, putting Subway’s score at an unusual low.

The restaurant’s Oven Roasted Chicken registered 53.6 percent chicken DNA, while the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki registered at just 42.8 percent. The study concluded that Subway adds soy fillers to its chicken products, and the chain even admitted to it. Although, they claim their chicken only contains 1 percent or less of soy protein.

“Subway Canada cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted,” Subway said in a statement. “However, we are concerned by the alleged findings you cite with respect to the proportion of soy content. Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1 percent or less of soy protein. We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”
