UPDATE, 8:39 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23: Chattanooga Police Department has now confirmed that six Woodmore Elementary School students have passed away in the deadly crash, KRMG reported.
In a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Sargent Austin Garrett of Chattanooga, Tennessee gave an update on the fatal school bus crash that occurred on Monday.
While a toxicology report found no traces of drugs or alcohol in the driver’s blood, police are still looking into his driving history. Johnthony Walker, the driver, was in another crash just two months ago, in which he sideswiped a car after failing to yield the right of way.
Monday’s crash resulted in the deaths of five Woodmore Elementary School students. As of this time, six more students are still in the hospital with injuries. Garrett, however, would not give details in their conditions out of respect for the families’ privacy.
Walker was arrested on five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving. Police say the criminal investigation is still ongoing, and they are currently reviewing video evidence from the crash and speaking with witnesses.
