While snowfall is not unusual in Tokyo, it almost never comes this early in the season. The last time Japan’s capital saw a November snowfall was 1962, and in a nation where pretty much everybody has a smart phone, the occasion didn’t pass by undocumented.

There is almost nothing more beautiful than a city in the snow. The quiet heaviness that mutes the city’s cars and trains, the fresh layering over otherwise dirty sidewalks and skyscrapers, the helpless umbrellas dancing frantically on sidewalks below–it’s all so wonderful.
