He told People Magazine that, after putting together a month sober, he just wants “to live a happy, healthy life.” In just 30 days in rehab, he says he’s not only learned to stay sober, but to stay sober for the right reasons. Odom says “I did this for me. No one else. You can’t do it for no one else if you want a sober life.”

That said, he’d like to reunite with some of the people that his disease made him leave behind.

Initially, he says he’d been worried about how his children would view his recovery, but says “I was thinking a lot too much about how they would think of me, but once I let down that guard, let them in and let them know everything I was going through, I think it helped build our relationship, to tell you the truth. Our relationship before that point, we were struggling.”

Odom mentions hope that he can reunite with Khloe, who finalized a divorce with him on December 17th of last year. “Just to reinstate what we had as a family, it was important to me. Khloé is important to me. She’s been through all this with me. She stood by my side. I just want to repay her.”

That’s a lot for someone with barely a month under their belt, and the former NBA star recognizes that. No matter what happens with his family, he’s straightforward about his actions and is holding fast to his convictions.

“Do I feel ashamed by the some of the choices I made? Hell yeah. They were despicable […] The most important thing I took away from it is that I’m stronger than I give myself credit for being.”
