According to Netflix, the documentary looks at the death of the beauty pageant queen in a totally unique way. Director Kitty Green blurs the lines of fiction and reality by traveling to Boulder, Colorado, to cast a film about Ramsey’s death. Many of the people who auditioned to play the key role in the case remember what the town was like in the wake of Ramsey’s real murder in the mid-1990s. The information in the case is given via the memories of the town’s people.

Netflix calls the film a “darkly moving exploration of crime, guilt and personal bias, “Casting JonBenét” expertly blurs the lines between documentary and drama.”

After playing in several festivals, the film has garnered rave reviews.

“This isn’t really a documentary about the Ramseys; it’s about these regular people with their theories and research, and they are all of us,” Scott Beggs of Nerdist wrote after seeing the film.

The film will be released on April 28, 2017.
