Ruth Sullivan received the surprise of a lifetime Wednesday when a trip to the doctor turned out to be a dream appointment at David’s Bridal in Lexington, Kentucky.

“My son lied to me,” Mrs. Sullivan, 92, told the State Journal upon realizing the true purpose of the outing.

Widow of military veteran Norm Sullivan, Mrs. Sullivan never had a traditional wedding gown as money was tight when she and her husband were first married and recently out of the Navy, reports the Frankfort, Ky.-based newspaper.

Little did she know then that she hadn’t missed her chance to wear her dream wedding dress, as Second Wind Dreams — a Make-A-Wish of sorts for the elderly — fulfilled Mrs. Sullivan’s long-delayed desire: They booked her an appointment for a fitting at David’s Bridal.

The former Navy nurse tried on three dresses the day of her appointment but was especially impressed with dress No. 1 — a lace-covered, full-length gown.

“I don’t feel like a bride,” she told the State Journal while in the dress. “I feel like a queen.”

But the festivity didn’t end with the frills. Mrs. Sullivan was also given a cake and champagne.

“I’d like to make a toast to my mother, the most beautiful bride of all today,” said the bride’s son, Tim Sullivan.

NBC’s “Today” was on hand to witness the dream come true and will air a special segment Dec. 3.
