Like many adult couples, Emily Jordan and her husband, Mike, dreamed of being parents.
Unfortunately, their dreams were shattered when Emily was diagnosed with cervical cancer and forced to have a hysterectomy.
The couple and their family was devastated.
“The thought of Emily and Mike not being able to have children and sort of share that piece of their lives with someone just broke my heart,” said Cindy Reutzel, Emily’s mother. “I want Emily to have that connection with another human being like I had with her.”
In preparation for her surgery, doctors were required to administer a pregnancy test. It was then that they discovered Emily was pregnant. Emily and Mike had to make a decision.
Fortunately, Emily’s ovaries could be saved for future use, and guess who came forward with a surprising offer? The 54-year-old Reutzel. Her proposition? She would act as a surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law’s child.
Though they were hesitant because of Reutzel’s age, the couple accepted her selfless offer.
“We couldn’t think of a better person than my mom,” Emily said.
