We now know where Prince George will spend his school days, and it’s a far cry from the school his father attended

Prince George is growing up fast! The young royal is already school-aged and will be beginning his education in September. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced Friday that the 3-year-old will attend Thomas’s Battersea School in London, a private day school just across the Thames River from Kensington Palace.

“Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to have found a school where they are confident George will have a happy and successful start to his education,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The school’s headmaster, Ben Thomas, also gave a statement about his future student, saying, “We are honored and delighted that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen Thomas’s Battersea for Prince George. We greatly look forward to welcoming him and all of our new pupils to the school in September.”

The decision was a surprise to most of the United Kingdom, as many people expected George to follow in his father’s footsteps by attending Wetherby School, the all-boys prep school that both Prince William and Prince Harry went to. But Thomas’s Battersea it is! Unlike Wetherby, George’s school is a mixed-sex school and costs around £6,865-$8,576 per term. Additionally, the school’s most important rule is to “be kind,” and students are discouraged from choosing a best friend so that no one’s feelings get hurt.

Parents of other children at the school were informed of the news and were told that nothing would change as a result of Prince George’s attendance.

“The Duke and Duchess have made it clear that they do not wish Prince George’s attendance at Thomas’s to change its aims, values or ethos in any way,” Thomas told them. “They would like, as far as is possible, for him to enjoy the same education that all of our pupils receive and for them to join the school community as all of our new parents do.”
