It should be transparent to anyone not living in a fallout shelter that Donald Trump is uniquely unqualified to be president of the United States. And indeed it is. As FiveThirtyEight reports, of the 106 candidates who have run for the White House since 1980, Trump by far has the lowest approval rating at this stage of the campaign, even bottoming out the repulsive Al Sharpton.

Nevertheless there are some conservatives who seem prepared to vote for an eminent domain-wielding, Democrat-donating, bankruptcy-enamored, half-witted harlequin so long as he says uncouth things about illegal immigrants. Alas, even on this he turns out to be a raging fraud. Newsmax reported back in 2012 after Mitt Romney lost the election:

Whether intended or not, comments and policies of Mitt Romney and other Republican candidates during this election were seen by Hispanics and Asians as hostile to them, Trump says.

“Republicans didn’t have anything going for them with respect to Latinos and with respect to Asians,” the billionaire developer says.

“The Democrats didn’t have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants, but what they did have going for them is they weren’t mean-spirited about it,” Trump says. “They didn’t know what the policy was, but what they were is they were kind.”

Romney, if you’ll recall, famously said that immigrants living here illegally should self-deport to save us the trouble. And that open-borders globalist Trump was having none of it:

“He had a crazy policy of self deportation which was maniacal,” Trump says. “It sounded as bad as it was, and he lost all of the Latino vote,” Trump notes. “He lost the Asian vote. He lost everybody who is inspired to come into this country.”

The GOP has to develop a comprehensive policy “to take care of this incredible problem that we have with respect to immigration, with respect to people wanting to be wonderful productive citizens of this country,” Trump says.

Tweaking Republicans for being “mean-spirited” and saying illegal immigrants want to be “wonderful productive citizens” is a far cry from: “We have drug dealers coming across, we have rapists, we have killers, we have murderers. I mean it’s common sense, what do you think they’re going to send us their best people, their finest people? The answer is no.”

So two questions for conservatives who defend Trump. First, have you grown tired of being fleeced? And second, if illegal immigration gets your goat, why not support Scott Walker? Not only is he a border hawk, but he has the distinct qualification of having never bankrupted a strip club casino.

That’s what I look for in a president.
