At 74-years-old, David Hoech might not be your typical protester. The Vietnam War veteran gets around with the assistance of an oxygen tank. But he drove 60 miles to Ferguson, Mo., to join last night’s protest of the death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

“The only thing that matters in all of this is that mother who lost her son…. I have four kids and eight grandkids and I haven’t had to bury any one of them. What she’s going through must be terrible,” Hoech told the Daily Beast.

Hoech came to Ferguson to help ease the strife that resulted from the shooting.

“I want to go back there and talk to the people,” Hoech said. “This is America. I can go where I want to go. And if you’re going to shoot my ass, go ahead and shoot me.”

According to the Daily Beast, Hoech was the only one who made it through the police barricade to speak to officers last night.
