Seventy-five-year-old Jack DeCarlo was hospitalized after hitting a 50 pound dumbbell on the N.J. Turnpike around 7:30 Monday morning. The dumbbell, which authorities say could have fallen off another vehicle or been thrown from an overpass, crashed through the windshield and struck DeCarlo in the head. Mr. DeCarlo and his wife, Patricia, were heading to Myrtle Beach when the accident occurred. Patricia was unhurt.
The Morning Call reports that DeCarlo was conscious when taken to the hospital, but no other details were given. The DeCarlo family is not speculating on the source of the dumbbell or whether it was thrown intentionally, but police are looking for any witnesses with information about the incident.
