Protests against President-elect Donald Trump are shaping up in many cities across the United States as his Friday inauguration approaches. But on Tuesday night, one man in Washington, D.C., got his own demonstration off to an early start — and in an entirely bizarre way.

The man set a pile of debris on fire in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue NW, directly in front of the Trump International Hotel. He claimed he also tried to set himself ablaze in protest of Trump’s presidency, calling him a “dictator.”

The man did not appear to be hurt, although he did seem a bit frazzled when interviewed on the street by a WRC-TV reporter. Before he was reportedly hospitalized with burns, he explained his motives for starting the fire, which he described as “denatured alcohol.”

Reporter Shomar Stone asked the man, “Why would you do this?”

“I was trying to light myself on fire as an act of protest … to protesting the fact that we’ve elected somebody that is completely incapable of respecting the Constitution of the United States,” said the protester, whose name was not released.

The 45-year-old California man reportedly has third-degree burns on about 10 percent of his body, according to the Washington Post.

Trump’s D.C. hotel opened in the city’s historic Old Post Office Building in October. The now-president-elect held a press conference there during the campaign to show off the beautiful building. It has been the site of protests leading up to Friday’s inauguration.

Vandals defaced the hotel with a message of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, “No justice, no peace.” A month later, protesters reportedly with the Million Mask March spray-painted “We Suck” on the hotel entrance.
