Ever since Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem before a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers to take a stand against police brutality, Americans across the country have followed suit by protesting in their own way or taking a public stand in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. This week, a huge company has become the latest voice to show its support: Ben & Jerry’s.

Frequently deemed the most popular ice cream brand in the country, it’s a big deal that Ben & Jerry’s has taken a pointed stand on issues surrounding police and race in America. The company posted a message on its official Twitter page at 12:06 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6. It has since been retweeted more than 20,000 times.

The tweet linked out to a longer post on the company’s website.

It’s been hard to watch the list of unarmed Black Americans killed by law enforcement officers grow longer and longer. We understand that numerous Black Americans and white Americans have profoundly different experiences and outcomes with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. That’s why it’s become clear to us at Ben & Jerry’s that we have a moral obligation to take a stand now for justice and for Black lives.

The company made it clear that the statement is not meant to put the onus on police officers. Blue lives matter, too.

“All lives do matter,” the company said. “But all lives will not matter until Black lives matter.”

Twitter users praised the brand for speaking out.

However, some people reacted by calling for a boycott of the brand.

This is not the first time Ben & Jerry’s has spoken out about civil right issues. The company previously released products to celebrate same-sex marriage.
