A graphic video of a white man being tortured led to the arrest of four black men and women, who can be seen and heard shouting things like “Fuck Donald Trump; fuck white people.”
NBC News correspondent Ron Mott responded to a statement made by Chicago Police Department Commander Kevin Duffin. “Kids make stupid decisions — I shouldn’t call them kids, they’re legally adults. But they’re young adults and they make stupid decisions,” Duffin originally stated.

Mott said that “kids can make some poor decisions from time to time,” but he quickly pointed out “the criminal element here.” He was referring to one of the assailants picking up the victim in a stolen van, as well as the fact that the assailants broke into the house where the torture was filmed.
“It goes beyond just stupid decisions by kids.”
Mott noted that the attackers made “so many errors,” such as turning on a live stream to document their torture. “If they were truly trying to be criminal,” he said “to broadcast your crime is not a smart thing to do.”

The Chicago police released the full details of the incident during a press conference later in the day. The victim’s parents dropped him off with one of the attackers, whom the victim had previously considered a friend, on Saturday. The original intent was for the victim to spend the night, but was reported missing by his parents the next day. The victim drove around in a van with one of the attackers and was unaware that the vehicle was stolen. By Tuesday, the victim and the attacker met with and picked up the other aggressors in the video. Some hours later, they began to taunt and torture the victim.
A neighbor called police with a noise complaint, giving the victim time to escape. He was later found by police in nothing but shorts, a tank top and sandals. He was “bloody and battered” and “injured and confused.”
