A new study from the Crime Prevention Research Center proves what many Americans have thought all along — the more citizens who carry, the less violent crime there is on the streets.

According to the study, the number of Americans with concealed-carry firearms permits has more than doubled in the last seven years. In that time period, violent crime has gone down more than 20 percent nationally.

In the last three years, more than 3 million Americans gained a concealed-carry permit, of which close to 5 percent of Americans now have. The actual number of Americans who carry is likely larger, as several states do not require a permit to carry, while others do not release their statistics.

John R. Lott, of the Crime Prevention Research Center, believes that a citizen with a concealed-carry permit helps alter the mindset of the common criminal.

“When you allow people to carry concealed handguns, you see changes in the behavior of criminals … Some criminals stop committing crimes, others move on to crimes in which they don’t come into contact with victims and others actually move to areas where they have less fear of being confronted by armed victims,” he said.
